It’s about the only piece of “software” that I use, and it’s just an Excel spreadsheet that I’ve modified to my needs. So to better see the patterns that the story is taking and head off any potential problems, I have come up with a character grid. Variety keeps the reader interested and the story moving. My rule is no more than one scene shift per chapter, and try not to stay in any one place for more than two consecutive chapters. I don’t want to spend too much time in the church, or be moving from place to place in any given chapter. Today I’m going to begin to break this up into clear chapters so I can better balance the entire work as to pacing, place, and characters. My one page synopsis turned into a 13 page synopsis, casually broken into maybe-chapters. It made a much more tidy story and I was able to dig deeper into the relationships instead of skimming over them. Yesterday I rewrote my plot to take out the demon plotline and expand two others of crime and love. This is what I’ve come up with over the last ten years or so, and what works for me. Disclaimer:everyone writes differently, there’s no wrong way to do it. Though a lot of my plotting methods have changed through the years, I still use and keep my character grids for future reference.įor those of you who haven’t been to the drama box in a few days, I’m taking the opportunity of NaNoWriMo and me just starting rough draft to detail out my plotting process. ![]() The post below is from 2009, but it’s still accurate. It’s invaluable in a rewrite when I have to insert a snippet of information and am not sure where to logically do it. It’s basically a spread sheet that lets me see the entire book at a glance and helps me organize my thoughts. Today, I’m at day three of my process, which is where my character grid comes into play. As I begin work on the next Hollows book, THE RULE, I’m sharing my plotting methods.

![]() An enterprise can grow into bigness only by serving the many. The captains of industry vie with one another in endeavors to supply the much talked-about common man with ever better and cheaper goods. The chief characteristic of the capitalistic system is precisely that it leaves for the most eminent individuals only one avenue open to deriving greatest advantage from their intellectual and moral superiority, viz., to minister to the best of their abilities to the well-being of the masses of less endowed fellow men. ![]() Thus, private ownership of producers’ goods turns into a public mandate, as it were, which is withdrawn as soon as the owners-the mandatories-no longer employ it for the best possible satisfaction of the wants of the public. On the market a daily repeated plebiscite of the consumers determines who should own and run the plants and the farms. ![]() In the capitalistic society private ownership of the means of production virtually serves all those who consume the goods produced. In the status society private property served the owners exclusively. Thus, the more gifted members of society are induced to serve the concerns of everybody, including the hosts of less efficient and less gifted people. There is only one method for the acquisition and preservation of wealth, viz., to supply the consumers in the best possible and cheapest way with those commodities and services which they ask for most urgently. By the instrumentality of profit and loss, the entrepreneurs and the capitalists are forced to cater to the wishes of the consumers. They determine by their buying or abstention from buying what should be produced, in what quantity, and of what quality. On the market the consumers, i.e., all of the people, are supreme. The modern system of the market economy-capitalism-radically differs from the status system of the ancien régime. A hierarchical order of hereditary castes was established under which the kings and aristocrats administered all affairs for their own benefit, while the lower strata of the population had no other function than that of toiling for their masters and of making life as agreeable as possible for them. The stronger beat the weaker into submission. In any social system the main issue is how to promote peaceful co-operation among people markedly different from one another not only in bodily characteristics but also in mental capacity, will power, and moral strength.įor thousands of years people knew only one method of dealing with inborn inequality: to make the superiority of the stronger over the weaker prevail throughout. The inborn inequality of the various individuals of the human species poses the most intricate problem for all interhuman relations. ![]() (Source tree requires you to register with a BitBucket account, plus several other steps) I think its easier to read diffs with two columns, but it takes up more screen space so I only use it when the diff looks confusing).
